The Jewish Calendar

The Jewish calendar reflects the unique way that Jews perceive time. Throughout our history, the calendar has rooted and defined us even more than the places in which we lived.

How did the Jewish calendar evolve? What was the most important holiday of the Jewish year in Biblical times? Why are there four "New Years" on the Jewish calendar? How does the moon’s orbit influence the calendar? How can we find our birthday according to the Jewish calendar?

In this family workshop, we will navigate our way Jewishly through all the days of the year. Each family will create its own calendar that can be customized to reflect holidays, birthdays, candle lighting, new moons and more.

Coming of Age

A Bar/Bat Mitzvah is the Jewish rite of passage to adulthood. It is the time when one becomes a son/daughter of the commandments. This milestone carries with it adult responsibilities and communal expectations. What kinds of issues arise at this juncture in one’s life? What is the psychological value of having Jewish adulthood begin at the onset of adolescence? How can one face the challenges, enjoy the privileges and find one’s own unique role as a Jewish Man or Woman?
