A
Look Inside Abraham and Sarah’s Kitchen
In this "Biblical Cooking Class" we
will learn what Sarah and Abraham served to visitors in
their desert
tent. Then we will digest the Biblical stories as we roll
up our sleeves, don aprons (and sandals?) and make some
delicious dishes of ancient times.
David and Goliath
Rembrandt, Carravagio, Bernini and Michelangelo
have all depicted their view of David and Goliath’s
encounter in their works. How do the representations of
this incident
differ one from the other? What do they communicate?
In this workshop we will interpret our perceptions of the
biblical
story by creating our own personal illustrations.
In the Spirit of Miriam:
Middle Eastern Drumming, Dancing and Chanting
The children of Israel didn’t
even have time to bake bread before their exodus from
Egypt--why did the women bother
to take their drums? Who was the Prophetess Miriam and
what was her role for the Jewish people? What kind of dances
did
the women do and what exactly is a timbrel
anyway?
This workshop will include an introduction
to percussion on the frame drum, lessons in
Middle Eastern dancing and the mystical art of whirling,
and practice in call and
response chanting.
Biblical Comic Strip
The Tanach is jam packed with events. In this workshop we
will break down text and isolate the story happenings in
comic strip form. In this way we will get closer to the action,
drama, comedy, personal trials and tribulations of biblical
characters and extract the morals and teachings of the scripture.
Torah Theatre
What better way to understand the parshiot than to assume
the roles of its characters? Become acquainted with the events
and people of the Torah and experience the realities within
the biblical universe from many perspectives.
Using principles of acting, theatre games, improvisation
and sensory exercises, we will step into the world of those
who came before us.
Telling our Stories
We are a people who tell stories; whether
to link us to the past, to teach, or simply to entertain.
In this workshop
we will enter the rich and colorful realm of Jewish storytelling,
drawing from the Torah, Talmud, Sefer Ha’Agadah
and folk tales.
STAM, Jewish Calligraphy
The Torah is written in what has come
to be known as the ‘flame-font.’ In
this workshop we will learn how to write Jewish calligraphy,
trace its evolution and art, and hear stories relating
to the Hebrew alphabet and the significance of its Gematria
(numerical value.)
Puppets Present
Fascinating tales from the Bible, Jewish fables and legends,
come to life, as you have never heard them before. Intricately
styled hand made puppet and marionette storytellers take
children and adults on a comic tour of great Jewish stories
with dashing heroes, clever heroines, dastardly villains,
cunning kings and advisors, while teaching the many virtues
to emulate (and a few vices to avoid).
