Fountain Chamber
Music Society Educational Program
This program is designed for a classroom setting to allow
maximum interaction between the Fountain musicians and the
students. Each session will conclude with a mini-performance
of a complete work discussed in the class. The sessions will
introduce students to a variety of instruments as well as
to the basic elements of music, different styles and origins,
and various means of musical expression.
To maximize the number of students and to be cost-effective
to your school, we will offer the same session to three
separate classes in one day. Payment will be per diem.
The session
topics can be tailored to your academic needs.
There are three options available:
1. Three sessions held in the classroom
2. Six sessions held in the classroom
3. Children’s concerts presented in an auditorium
Story Time
In this session, the narrative powers of music are explored
by having the children invent a story to go along with
a short piece of music that will be performed for them.
Dancing Rhythms
The wonderful world of rhythm will be presented through
a variety of different works, and in connection with
dance. A percussionist will be featured and the children
will
be
given wood blocks and sticks to participate in this
favorite activity.
Song and Feeling
With a special emphasis on expression, the children will
be given a painting to study and describe. By choosing from
tunes that we present them, they will translate the painting
into a musical expression to suit their descriptions of the
painting.
Folk Music
Now it is time to take a long trip and hear the music from
around the world. With the help of our composer in residence,
we will play original folk pieces and classical music influenced
by the Blues, Klezmer, Gypsy songs, Irish jigs, and more.
The children will also watch an improvisation by our composer
in the style of their choice.
Conversations
"Row, Row, Row Your Boat" will be taken to new
heights in this class, teaching the students the art of musical
conversation through imitative writing. The students will
play the game "How Many Voices Can You Follow?" as
an excellent exercise for concentration and ear training.
Creation – Let there be Music!
The final session will be an opportunity for the students
to take a baton and make artistic choices based on the material
covered in the previous sessions. By giving them several
signals to learn, they will dictate to the musicians different
levels of dynamics, articulation and motion that they feel
work throughout a selected piece. If the six-session plan
is not possible for budget or scheduling reasons, the program
can be modified to include sessions 1, 3 and 6.
