These three articles, the links to which are included here, are important reading if you are teaching about the 350 years of Jewish-American experience or even if you are just curious about how scholars understand it.

Of particular interest is the article by David Kaufmann, at the CAJE website. He writes about the various lenses through which we can understand the history of Jews in America. We can look at how Jews became American. We can look at how Judaism has developed in America. Or we can look at how the synthesis of Judaism and the American experience has created an entirely new American Jewish culture. One idea that Kaufmann suggests is that it is the American Jewish experience that has greatly influenced American culture in the direction of 'cultural pluralism', as opposed to the older idea of American culture as a 'melting pot' in which immigrants would lose their own identity.

The other two articles are by Jonathan Sarna, who is widely acknowledged as the "dean" of American Jewish history today. He has recently published what is being called the definitive book about the subject - American Judaism, A History.
